You know what they say about special Chevelle SS's and Corvettes,
how they only made a few hundred while just a couple thousand exist
today? Paperwork is beyond key for these
cars--this is an undisputable fact. Take
the example before you: Cortez Silver, L78 396, four speed, cowl hood…you’ve
seen cars like this before at shows. What
this car has that most don’t is not one but two build sheets--this car came from
the factory as you see it--and that makes all the difference in value and
collectibility.
Check out the build sheet for the specs on this special

That’s a dream option list, and it’s confirmed with both
the under seat build sheet in perfect condition and a partial sheet from the
driver door panel.
Shipped to Central Chevrolet in Atlanta, GA,
this special ordered car obviously spent a lot of time in the south as the
sheetmetal was nearly perfect and remains all original. The frame was removed and set aside, and all
body gaps and lines were set to better than factory specs. The restorer isn’t a big fan of vinyl tops,
so the holes were filled and the trim removed.
Aside from the painted roof and a set of Flowmaster mufflers underneath
those are the only two changes from stock.
The body and paint are excellent, with straight sides, smooth lines and
gorgeous liquid silver covering the shell.
Chrome parts from bumper to bumper are show quality, as is the stainless
trim, the badging and the glass. The
awesome cowl induction hood works as it should, with all correct parts and new
hood pins. Four new Wheel Vintiques
rally wheels with new trim rings and center caps are surrounded by Goodyear
Polyglas tires so new they retain all of their casting nubs on the tread. Underneath the floorpans were cleaned, smoothed
and painted satin with the correct red primer tone. This car will please the pickiest
buyers.
The removed frame was blasted and smoothed before being
coated in high quality semigloss chassis paint.
The front and rear suspensions are detailed properly with correct
finishes and inspection marks. The 12
bolt rear out back and the replacement four speed in the middle were rebuilt
and function as they should. A new
exhaust system runs from the correct manifolds in the front to the chrome tips
out the back, and the Flowmaster soundtrack only adds to the muscle
attitude.
Under the hood is the original and date code correct 396ci
engine, rebuilt to stock specs. In the
interest of full disclosure we have to point out that the block was decked,
virtually eradicating the marks on the block, and the numbers are all but
completely gone. That said, we believe
the engine to be original. The correct
Winters intake sits atop the rectangular port heads while the engine beats to
the rhythm of the stock replacement solid lifter cam. All new and correct hoses and wires are in
place, and a new Holley Street Avenger carburetor takes the place of the lost
original. A new reproduction Delco battery
is in the corner, a freshly recored radiator is up front and correct details
are everywhere.
Inside you’re treated to all new upholstery from door
panel to door panel and from dash pad to package tray. New carpeting and new sill plates are on the
floor while a new headliner is above. The
four speed shifter and SS steering wheel fall to hand while the correct 6500RPM
tach tells you when to shift. With a
mere four miles since restoration every part is as fresh as you’d expect in a
car of this caliber.
With its excellent option list, outstanding condition,
documentation ad L78 heart this SS is one of the coolest Chevelles ever built,
as well as one of the most collectible.
