And now for something completely over-the-top:  This Saturn Yellow, numbers matching STAGE 1 GSX!  Not the mere 455 model, but the honest-to-gosh, full boat, one-of-282 Stage 1 automatics!  Complete with GSX Historic Society paperwork, the ORIGINAL build sheet, the ORIGINAL invoice, ORIGINAL Protect-O-Plate and more this is the right GSX to add to your collection!

Every once in a while, Buick engineers would shed their button-down dress coats and let loose some seriously cool performance cars.  The Grand National comes to mind, all in black with big power.  Further back, one of the most underrated cars of the muscle era was the Skylark GS455 Stage 1.  For a car which could lean house against virtually anything out of Detroit the cars were subdued, and many enthusiasts simply didn’t give them a second look.  Until one ate them for lunch, that is.  Buick got out the psychedelics, tuned in, dropped out and created the GSX.  Spoilers, stripes and the 455--oh my!

Here's the way the factory built this amazing muscle car:

46 37 GS455 Hardtop

QQ Saturn Yellow exterior

188 Black bucket seat interior

AX GSX+Stage 1 option package

BC Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission with floor length center console

CD Quick ratio power steering and power brakes

DC AM Sonoramic radio with rear speaker

F7 F60-15 Firestone Super Wide Oval white letter tires and chrome wheels

G1 3.42 rear axle with Positive Traction

H6 Rally ride control package (rear stabilizer bar, HD springs, boxed lower control arms)

I6 Air conditioning

J3 Custom front and rear seat belts

K3 Speed alert

L1 Soft-Ray tinted glass, all windows

N3 Heavy Duty Air Cleaner

P1 Carpet Savers (floor mats)

S7 Tilt wheel

UK Full rallye gauge package with tachometer and Convenience Group (Trunk light, mirror map light)

X2 Rally steering wheel

That’s a whopping $2,117.44 worth of options more than a standard GS455!  All told the out the door price was $5570.69, Paid by Numa Duncan Bitting to Tom Mitchell Buick in Atlanta, GA.  Numa must have really wanted the car as the dealer only offered $1704.81 on the 1969 Riviera trade-in!

Buick thankfully called out the GS455 package directly in the VIN, saving you the hassle of proving what you have like the Chevy guys do. Ignoring the paperwork, you'd need to find the car's serial numbers on the motor and transmission to verify the car is a Stage 1. The front engine pad clearly states that this is the original motor, and the "SS" stamp on the rear pad designates it as a Stage 1 piece. Similarly, the transmission has the VIN stamped clearly and crisply on the driver's side while the Stage 1-specific code BB lies on a tag on the passenger side. Pull the air cleaner to find carburetor number 7040246, exclusive to Buick's ultimate machine.  The numbers are right and the performance is there.

The fully restored interior looks assembly line fresh. The dash pad is straight and soft, the gauges are clean and all switchgear operates as designed. New upholstery from the carpet up is in place and in as-new condition.  Sill plates, window cranks, armrest bases and more are new or reconditioned originals.  This is a comfortable, comprehensive and correct cabin.

Ducking down to examine the undercarriage you know immediately this is an all clean, all original sheetmetal car.  The frame off restoration was demanded by the car’s rarity, not condition!  Refurbished steering and suspension components bolt to the correctly finished frame.  New brake components from rotors and drums to hardware, lines and hoses are in place.  A pair of 70 series Flowmasters offers up the muscle car sound while retaining Buick-like cruising sound levels.

Saturn Yellow certainly wasn't the subtle color for high performance cars and on a Buick body it looks surreal.  Chrome bumpers and trim are the rechromed originals while the lights and lenses are fresh and new. Stainless trim pieces shine thanks to their careful polishing. The glass is the original Soft-Ray pieces. The 1970 chromed 15” Rally wheels with G60-15 Polyglas tires make this show stopper of a car even flashier. Of course, all of the stripes, scoops and spoilers are in excellent condition, as well.

Dropping their ridiculous 400ci limit for intermediates in 1970, GM created some of the most powerful muscle cars of all time. With the exception of Cadillac’s 472 and 500ci engines and the upcoming 2009 Corvette ZR1 no GM passenger car had before or has since exceeded the ’70 455’s 510lbs/ft torque rating. 1970 was a banner year at Buick--their best and the last year before emissions strangled output. GSX’s have always been blue chip investments, and this gorgeous 1 of 282 car with its original drivetrain, paperwork and outlandish looks is simply something which won’t remain on thee on the market for long.
